When to Start Diapers for a Senior Dog — Toileting Care Steps, and Monthly Cost

If accidents are increasing, try widening the pee-pad area around the sleeping spot before jumping to diapers. A diaper runs about ¥57.6 each versus about ¥12.4 for a thick pee pad — roughly a 4.6x difference.
- Choose diaper size by waist circumference, not weight
- The "thick" label isn't reliable — it's the top complaint in 68.3% of low-rated reviews
- Blood in the urine, no urine, or sudden-onset incontinence — see a vet without waiting
Care needs vary by size: see large dogs (roughly 25kg+) or small dogs and cats
A towel left on the floor is wet again by morning. Some mornings you can't tell whether they didn't make it in time, or it happened while they were asleep. Toileting issues affect daily life during caregiving more than almost anything else — more laundry, lingering smells, and waking up repeatedly at night.
Here we go through how to tell which stage you're at, choosing between pee pads and diapers, and what it actually costs. If you're worried about your pet's condition, talk to a vet before trying anything written here.
① First, work out which stage you're at
"Accidents have increased" can mean three different things, and the right response depends on which one it is.
- Not making it to the toilet in time — they know where it is, but don't get there before it happens
- Accidents in the sleeping spot — it happens while they're lying down, without them noticing
- Can't stand unassisted — they can't hold a position, and need help staying supported
At stage 1, changing the toilet's location and the flooring can still reduce accidents. Once stage 2 starts, that's often when there's still time to begin thinking about diapers.
② Before diapers, widen the area pee pads can cover
Diapers aren't a last resort, but there's a lower-effort step first. Try in this order.
- Move the toilet closer to the sleeping spot (a shorter distance makes it easier to get there in time)
- Change the flooring between the sleeping spot and the toilet to something non-slip
- At night only, widen the area of pee pads around the sleeping spot
There's a cost reason for this order too. The median price is about ¥57.6 per diaper versus about ¥12.4 per thick pee pad — about 4.6x more. For as long as pee pads are enough, they're easier on both your budget and your workload.▶ Browse thick pee pads on Rakuten![]()
③ Choosing pee pads — the "thick" label isn't reliable
You bought what was labeled a thick pad, but there's a wet footprint left behind anyway. That's the single most common complaint in low-rated pee pad reviews.
The second complaint, "doesn't absorb," traces back to the same root cause. It's thin, so it leaks. Most low ratings come down to one single problem.
In other words, the mistake buyers make isn't "picking a bad product" — it's trusting the word "thick."There's no standardized definition of "thick," so the actual amount of material varies widely even between products labeled the same way.
Is a high average rating a safe bet?
Unfortunately, the average rating doesn't tell you much. Across the 5 products we checked, average ratings clustered tightly between 4.31 and 4.55.
But when we looked at the share of 1- and 2-star reviews, it ranged from 2.4% to 9.1% — a 4.8x spread. A higher review count doesn't necessarily mean better either: one product with 1,807 reviews had a 9.0% low-rating share, while another with 1,439 reviews had only 2.4%.
Not the average rating — the share of low ratings is what's worth looking at.
Two practical pointers: a very low price per sheet usually means it's thin. And if you want to keep an eye on things day to day, a white pad is the better choice. One review specifically mentioned that a dark-colored pad made it impossible to see the urine color and check on health.
④ Choosing diapers — measure first, fastening is where it gets tricky
There are two separate products: the diaper itself, and the cover or belt that holds it in place. Low ratings cluster around the latter.
Only 1.1% of reviews of the diapers themselves were 1- or 2-star. For covers and belts it was 2.4% — more than double. And of the low-rated diaper reviews, 10 out of 11 were about sizing. The diaper itself rarely disappoints, whichever one you choose.
So the first step isn't comparing products. It's measuring the waist. Choosing by weight leads to a poor fit — two dogs at the same 3kg can have very different builds.▶ Browse dog care diapers on Rakuten![]()
Now, what's actually going wrong on the fastening side?
The third issue is a little different from a product defect — it's the dog resisting it. Fastening it more tightly isn't the only answer. Another option is planning around it coming off, by widening the pee-pad area near the sleeping spot.
What to check when choosing a suspender-style holder
Suspender-style holders, which suspend the diaper to keep it from slipping down, are one of the more common fastening tools.
The weak point is the clip. Resin clips can crack after repeated putting-on and taking-off. Broken clips or buckles accounted for 12.6% of low ratings. Checking the build quality of the clip in the product photos before buying is worth the extra minute.
⑤ Protecting the skin around the rear
The biggest concern while using diapers is moisture. Staying damp for long stretches puts stress on the skin.
- Change it when wet — checking rather than going by a fixed schedule is more reliable
- Let the area dry before putting the next one on
- Don't leave it on constantly — build in time without a diaper
※If the skin is red, sore, or the smell changes, don't treat it yourself — talk to a vet.
⑥ Odor and waste
One thing that has more impact than expected in toileting care is the trash. In summer especially, storing it until the next collection day gets unpleasant fast.
- Wrap used items small and put them in a sealed container
- Treat the smell in the room and the smell in the trash as two separate problems
- Some deodorizers mask the smell, others break it down. Unscented options tend to be easier to live with during caregiving

Options for households that can't take out the trash daily
Worth saying up front: pee pads plus a deodorizer are enough for most households. What follows only applies if your situation matches.
There are home food-waste composters that can also handle pet waste — a type that breaks material down using microbes and heat, priced at ¥134,500. This is the kind of price range worth considering only once several conditions line up: multiple pets, caregiving that's stretched into years, or living somewhere with collection only twice a week.

⑦ What it costs per month
Dividing real Rakuten prices by the count per pack gives a median of ¥57.6 per diaper and ¥12.4 per thick pee pad. At those unit prices, here's what a month looks like at each of the three usage levels from section ①.
| Usage pattern | Per month |
|---|---|
| Pee pads only (3/day) | About ¥1,100 |
| Pads by day, diapers at night (2 pads + 2 diapers) | About ¥4,200 |
| Diapers all day (5/day) | About ¥8,600 |
※How many are used per day varies a lot by the individual pet's condition. The table above is a projection based on "if you used X per day" — not a measurement of actual usage. The unit prices are based on real market prices.
⑧ For cats
Cats call for a different approach than dogs. Rather than diapers, changing the litter box itself is often more effective first.
- Switch to a low-sided litter box (stepping over a high side can become uncomfortable)
- Don't switch the litter itself — sticking with what they're used to reduces accidents
- Add more litter boxes to shorten the distance they need to travel
Ongoing accidents outside the litter box can also point to a health change. If it starts suddenly, it's worth getting checked.
⑨ Your own back, and the nights
Toileting care is hard on your back — crouching down over and over throughout the day adds up.
- Raise the sleeping area slightly to cut down on how often you have to crouch
- Keep supplies in one spot so you're not walking back and forth to fetch them
- Let go at night — lay down a wide area before bed and clean up in the morning
A night you couldn't get up to change them doesn't have to count as a failure. Perfect care matters less than you not collapsing.
⑩ Signs it's time to see a vet
See a vet without waiting if you notice any of the following.
- Blood in the urine
- No urine, or a sudden drop in amount
- Sudden-onset incontinence
- Going to the toilet often but only passing a little each time
- Redness or soreness around the rear

Frequently asked questions
When should I start using diapers for a senior dog?
There's no fixed point. While it's only occasionally not making it to the toilet in time, widening the area of pee pads around the sleeping spot is often still enough. Once accidents start happening while they're lying down, that's usually the stage to consider diapers. The median price is ¥57.6 per diaper versus ¥12.4 per thick pee pad — about 4.6x more. Pee pads are the lighter option for as long as they're enough.
How do I choose the right size of dog diaper?
Measure waist circumference, not weight. When we read every low-rated Rakuten review we could find, 10 of 11 one- and two-star reviews of the diapers themselves were about sizing. For diaper covers or belly bands, 53.7% were also about sizing. It's decided by measurement more than by the product itself.
I bought a "thick" pee pad but it feels thin. Why?
There’s no standardized definition of "thick." Reading every 1- and 2-star review of pee pads we could find, 68.3% of 284 reviews raised this exact complaint — "labeled thick but it’s thin." Products priced very low per sheet tend to be the thin ones.
Should I just pick the pee pad with the highest star rating?
The average rating doesn't tell you much. Across the 5 products we checked, average ratings clustered tightly between 4.31 and 4.55 — but the share of 1- and 2-star reviews ranged from 2.4% to 9.1%, a 4.8x spread. Looking at the share of low ratings tells you more than the average.
My dog hates the diaper and takes it off.
It's not unusual. 27.4% of 1- and 2-star reviews of diaper covers and belts described the dog taking it off or chewing through it. Rather than only fastening it more securely, another option is to plan around it coming off — widening the pee-pad area around the sleeping spot. If the resistance is strong, or the skin looks red, talk to a vet before changing how it's fastened.
How much does toileting care cost per month?
It falls into three tiers depending on how you use it. Pee pads alone (3 a day): about ¥1,100. Pads by day, diaper at night: about ¥4,200. Diapers all day (5 a day): about ¥8,600. These are estimates based on median prices of ¥57.6 per diaper and ¥12.4 per thick pee pad.
When should I consider a vet visit for a pet's toileting issues?
Blood in the urine, no urine at all, sudden-onset incontinence, or going to the toilet often but only passing a little each time — see a vet without waiting in any of these cases. Redness or soreness around the rear is also worth having checked rather than self-treating.
Does the color of the pee pad matter?
Being able to see the color of the urine matters during caregiving as a way to check for health changes. One low-rated review specifically mentioned that a dark-colored pad made it impossible to see the urine color and check on health. If you want to keep an eye on things day to day, a white pad is easier to read.
How the numbers on this page were gathered
Unit prices were calculated by dividing the listed price of each Rakuten Ichiba product by the count per pack stated in the product name (23 diaper products, 35 pee pad products). Because prices move with sales and coupons, we re-check them roughly every three months.
The low-rating breakdown comes from reading every review on Rakuten's "everyone's reviews" from page one to the end, and classifying every 1- and 2-star review (13 products, 9,811 reviews total, 390 of them 1- or 2-star). We haven't reproduced the review text itself — only the counts and categories.
※For products with more than 3,000 reviews, Rakuten's review page display limit means we couldn't read through to every 1- and 2-star review. This survey is therefore limited to products with 3,000 or fewer total reviews — the most popular large-volume products aren't included.
